# Item types

> The types of item in Alike, which ones your agent can create, and the values that tasks and decisions use.

Each item in Alike has a type. The tools and item IDs call the type the "kind", for example `urn:alike:task:<id>`. See [Key concepts](https://alike.help/get-started/concepts.md).

To see the current list, ask your agent: "List Alike's entity kinds." To see the fields that the agent can write for a type, ask: "Describe the Alike `task` kind."

## Types

| Type | What it is | Your agent can create it |

| `task` | A unit of work. Branches, pull requests, and issues link to tasks | Yes |
| `decision` | A choice, with its reason, status, and code anchors. See [Decisions](https://alike.help/use/decisions.md) | Yes |
| `project` | A group of related tasks | Yes |
| `document` | Reference material, for example a spec, a note, or an imported file | Yes |
| `event` | A calendar event or a meeting | Yes |
| `agent` | One of your coding agents | No |
| `agent_session` | One run of an agent: its title, summary, outcome, branch, and linked work items. The raw transcript is not part of the item. See [Agent session](https://alike.help/get-started/concepts.md) | No |
| `person` | You, a colleague, or a contact | No |
| `organization` | A company or other organization | No |
| `team` | A team in a workspace | No |
| `daily_plan` | The plan for one day | No |
| `assistant` | Your Alike assistant | No |
| `location` | A place | No |

## Task status

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `proposed` | Suggested, not yet accepted |
| `todo` | Accepted, not started |
| `in_progress` | Work has started |
| `blocked` | Work cannot continue |
| `completed` | Done |
| `deferred` | Put off for now |
| `declined` | You chose not to do it |

A task's priority is `low`, `medium`, `high`, or `urgent`.

## Task links

Your agent can link two tasks:

| Link | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `subtask_of` | This task is part of another task |
| `blocks` | This task stops another task. Alike adds the opposite link, `blocked_by`, to the other task |
| `blocked_by` | Another task stops this task. Alike adds the opposite link, `blocks`, to the other task |
| `same_as` | This task is a duplicate. Alike hides it and moves its activity to the other task. This works only for tasks that the agent created with `create_new_work_focus` |

A decision's type is `one_time` (the default) or `standing`. A standing decision is a rule that applies until a newer decision replaces it.

## Field names

Your agent must use the exact field names. Alike refuses an unknown or misspelled field, and suggests the nearest correct name. Some fields are set by Alike only, for example counts. The kind description lists these fields.
