# Privacy controls

> Change who sees your data, stop sharing agent activity, and stop sending data from an agent.

Alike has four kinds of privacy control. Each one controls a different thing.

| Control | What it changes | Where |
| - | - | - |
| [Sharing level](#choose-a-sharing-level) | Who in your workspace sees each type of item | Web app, **Settings → Privacy** |
| [Share or hide one item](#share-or-hide-one-item) | Who sees one item | Web app, the shield icon on the item's card |
| [Agent activity sharing](#stop-sharing-agent-activity) | If your workspace sees your agents and session summaries | Web app, **Agents** page |
| [Capture and hooks](#stop-all-sending-from-an-agent) | What your machine sends to Alike | Your machine |

## Choose a sharing level

1. In the web app, open **Settings → Privacy**.
2. Choose a preset: **High Sharing**, **Balanced Sharing**, **Low Sharing**, or **Complete Privacy**. See [Sharing presets](https://alike.help/privacy/who-sees-what.md#sharing-presets).
3. Optional: change the audience for single types of items.

A new preset applies to your existing items and to new items. When you make a type of item more private, people lose access to the existing items of that type. When you make it more public, they get access to the existing items. When you choose a preset, Alike also resets your trusted circle.

> [!NOTE]
>
> A preset does not undo an item that you hid by hand. If you hide one item from your workspace, a later preset change does not share it again.

You can also ask your agent: "Show my Alike privacy policy" or "Preview the Balanced Sharing preset". When the agent replaces your policy, the new policy replaces the old one completely. Rules that are not in the new policy are removed. Shares of single items stay.

## Share or hide one item

In the web app, find the item's card, for example in **World Model**. Hover over the card. Select the shield icon (**Privacy settings**). You can:

* Move people between **Can See** and **Cannot See**.
* Choose the properties that each person can see.
* Apply the change to this item only, or to all items of this type.

You can also ask your agent to share one of your items with a person, a group, or the whole workspace. The agent must name the properties to share. To remove a share, use the web app. Agents cannot remove shares.

## Stop sharing agent activity

Your agents and their session summaries are shared as one group. On the **Agents** page, find one of your own agent cards. Select **Stop sharing** to hide all your agent activity from your workspace. Select **Share activity** to share it again.

This setting applies to all your agents together. You cannot hide one session and share the others.

> [!NOTE]
>
> This button controls the share with the whole workspace only. If your sharing level shares agents with your team, for example Balanced Sharing, change it in **Settings → Privacy**. If you choose High Sharing again later, your agent activity is shared again.
>
> This setting also does not hide the tasks and decisions that Alike found in your sessions. Those follow the sharing level for tasks and decisions.

## Hide an item from your own views

These actions hide items from your lists and briefs. They are not privacy controls, and they do not delete data.

* **Archive** a task. You can unarchive it later.
* **Dismiss** any item that you own. Choose a reason, for example "incorrect" or "not a task". The reasons help Alike find better items in the future.

Ask your agent, for example: "Dismiss that task in Alike, it's not a real task."

## Stop all sending from an agent

| Goal | Action |
| - | - |
| Stop transcript uploads from one agent | Run the installer again and answer no for that agent. Or run `npx @alikeai/setup --capture=<the agents to keep>` |
| Stop the live hooks in one agent | Remove Alike from that agent. See [Remove Alike from one agent](https://alike.help/install/update-and-uninstall.md#remove-alike-from-one-agent-only) |
| Stop everything on this machine | `npx @alikeai/setup --uninstall` |
| Stop Alike's notes before file edits only | Write `{"save": false}` to `~/.alike/runtime/flags.json`. This stops a local feature only. It does not change what is sent |

> [!WARNING]
>
> You cannot pause capture for one repository or one session. To keep a project out of Alike, work on it in an agent that does not have Alike, or uninstall Alike from the machine while you work on it.

## Control what Alike gives your agent

These settings change the context that Alike adds to your agent's sessions. They do not change what your machine sends, or who sees your data. See [Tune what your agent gets](https://alike.help/use/tune-context.md).
