# Update and uninstall

> Get the latest installer, change which agents are connected, and remove Alike from a machine.

## Update Alike

Run the installer again. It copies the latest runtime and updates the entries in each agent's settings.

```bash theme={null}
npx @alikeai/setup@latest
```

The `@latest` tag makes `npx` fetch the newest version instead of a copy in its cache.

Restart your agents after you update.

## Add an agent that you installed later

Run the installer again. It finds the new agent and wires it. If you want transcripts from the new agent, answer yes to the capture question, or pass the full list with `--capture=`. See the warning in [Install Alike](https://alike.help/install/install.md#is-it-safe-to-run-again).

## Set up only some agents

Use `--harness=` with a comma-separated list of [agent IDs](https://alike.help/get-started/supported-agents.md):

```bash theme={null}
npx @alikeai/setup --harness=claude,cursor
```

This run also turns off transcript capture for every agent that is not in the list. See the warning in [Install Alike](https://alike.help/install/install.md#is-it-safe-to-run-again).

## Uninstall

```bash theme={null}
npx @alikeai/setup --uninstall
```

The uninstaller does these things:

* Removes Alike's entries from the settings of every supported agent. It does not touch your own entries.
* Removes the note in `~/.claude/CLAUDE.md`.
* Removes the local runtime in `~/.alike/runtime`.
* Deletes the machine's credential, `~/.alike/credentials.json`.
* Removes the hourly sweep file on macOS, if you created one.

When it finishes, it prints:

```text theme={null}
Removed Alike wiring, runtime, and credentials. Transcript archives left untouched (your data).
```

It also prints a note that tells you to revoke the machine in Alike settings. You cannot do this in the web app yet. To cancel the credential, contact [support@alike.work](mailto:support@alike.work).

`npx @alikeai/setup --uninstall --dry-run` prints a short summary and changes nothing. It does not list each file.

### What the uninstaller keeps

The uninstaller does not delete these items. Delete them yourself if you want a clean machine.

| Item | Location | How to remove it |
| - | - | - |
| Local copies of your transcripts | `~/.alike/archive/` | `rm -rf ~/.alike` removes this and all other Alike files |
| Logs and state files | `~/.alike/` | Same as above |
| Backups of your settings files | `<file>.bak-alike` next to each file | Delete each file. Keep it if you want to restore your settings from before Alike |
| A loaded hourly sweep (macOS) | Loaded in `launchd` | `launchctl remove works.alike.sweep`, or log out and log in |
| A cron line that you added (Linux) | Your crontab | `crontab -e` and delete the line |
| The VS Code setting `chat.hooks.enabled` | VS Code `settings.json` | Delete the key if you do not use other hooks |

### What stays in your Alike account

The uninstaller changes only your machine. Sessions and other data that Alike already received stay in your account. See [Delete your data](https://alike.help/privacy/delete-data.md).

The machine's credential also stays valid on Alike's side. The uninstaller deletes the only copy on the machine. If you think someone copied the file, contact [support@alike.work](mailto:support@alike.work).

## Remove Alike from one agent only

The uninstaller removes Alike from every agent at the same time. To remove it from one agent:

1. Open that agent's settings file. [Supported agents](https://alike.help/get-started/supported-agents.md) lists the files.
2. Delete the MCP server entry named `alike`.
3. Delete the hook entries whose command contains `.alike/runtime`.
4. Restart the agent.

If you run the installer again later, it wires that agent again, unless you pass `--harness=` without it.
